Q: What size air conditioner do I need for my room?

Calculate BTUs needed using room square footage: multiply length × width × 25 BTUs per sq ft for basic cooling. A 12×15 ft room (180 sq ft) needs about 4,500 BTUs. Add 600 BTUs for kitchens, sunny rooms, or high ceilings. Oversized units cycle on/off frequently and don't dehumidify properly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size air conditioner do I need for my room?

Calculate BTUs needed using room area: multiply length × width × 25 BTUs per m² (approx. adjusted from sq ft).

A 3.66 × 4.57 meter room (≈ 16.7 m²) needs about 4,500 BTUs.

Add 600 BTUs for kitchens, very sunny rooms, or high ceilings. Oversized units cycle on/off frequently and don’t dehumidify properly.

How much does it cost to run an air conditioner?

Running costs depend on unit efficiency (SEER rating), local electricity rates, and usage hours. A 12,000 BTU unit running 8 hours daily might cost €50-120 monthly (assuming ~€0.30/kWh) . Higher SEER ratings (6+ is good) significantly reduce operating costs over time despite higher upfront investment. For the 12,000 BTU unit assuming the usage and energy cost from above:

SEER rating of 5.5 (A+) ≈ €86/month
SEER rating of 8.5 (A+++) ≈ €54–60/month

What's the difference between split and portable air conditioners?

Split systems have separate indoor and outdoor units connected by refrigerant lines, offering higher efficiency, quieter operation, and permanent installation. Portable units are self-contained, easy to move between rooms, but generally less efficient and noisier due to the compressor being indoors.

Do air conditioners require professional installation?

Split systems require professional installation for refrigerant lines, electrical connections, and proper mounting. Window units can often be self-installed with basic tools. Portable units just need window exhaust kit setup. Professional installation ensures warranty coverage and optimal performance for most systems.
